On Saturday September 20th it was standing room only as the Sue McSheffrey campaign opened an office on John St. in Arnprior. Supporters and friends packed the former store to celebrate a milestone for the New Democrats.
“We are getting such a great response from the residents of Arnprior, McNab, and Braeside that we had to have an office here” said Sue McSheffrey.
The office will be staffed by volunteer supporters of Mrs. McSheffrey and managed by Arnprior resident and retired nurse, Judith Sandles.
At the grand opening, Sean Illman-White signed his first ever membership form and joined the New Democrats. Having just turned 13, he became their youngest member and was congratulated by Sue McSheffrey.
“The New Democrats stand for all the things I believe in” said Sean “like tackling poverty, cleaning up the environment and looking after the less fortunate.” Sean was also proudly wearing his “End Poverty Now” T shirt.
Sue McSheffrey pointed to the window display of Tommy Douglas, founder of the NDP and father of medicare.
“That’s what we believe in,” she said. “‘…Courage my friends, it’s not too late to build a better world.’ Tommy Douglas’ words are as true today as they were 30 years ago. This is what the New Democrats are trying to do: build a better, kinder world. I strongly believe Jack Layton is the leader that will continue Tommy’s legacy of great ideas and good works.”
